Attempting Alterations

It took me about a year, but I finally did it. I added length this pair of scrubs. Shoot, one down, 4 sets and an extra pair of pants to go! I bought 5 sets of solid color scrubs somewhere in August of last year for $10/set online. It was a great deal, but the pants were kinda short. Big shocker, I know. So I just wore them hanging low so that they were "longer" but I was not exposed. I have since given all the scrub sets to Colleen. In my defense, I was working full time and going to school full time at that time, so I didn't really have the time to learn how to use a sewing machine properly and how to add length.
But yesterday I did. This is my first clothing project using the sewing machine. I'm so glad Colleen was here yesterday, she taught me a lot! She was real cute, sitting at the table with me while I fiddled with fabric, and occasionally she would look at me and say, No, No, not like that, and show me something new. My favorite was her response to my ironing (I'm really bad at ironing!) I don't think she knew that I don't know how to iron, and she looked shocked at what I was doing. Hee Hee. Turns out I am real good at burning clothes because I am impatient. Imagine that.
Colleen helped me through the project, made me tear out stitches I didn't want to (because it's a lot of work!), and do things over. I really had a lot of fun with her last night. And now I know what a top stitch is.
I really enjoyed putting the material on the collar of the scrub top. I started it with scrap material, just playing around, trying out design concept. I pinned it down and ironed it into shape and showed Colleen. She was so sweet, she looked it over, moved around a few pins and told me to straighten it out and show her again, so I did. Then she explained to me how I could sew it on, just like it was! So cool! I think my first attempt was a success! I can now proceed to the other 4 sets! I learned a lot of what not to to, and have some improved design ideas and I think the next 4 sets will go smoother. I'm not real happy with the one of the cuff additions, it doesn't wrap all the way around, but I've worked out that problem, just don't have enough material to re-do it.
Colleen is real daring with the colors, picking patterns I never would have considered. I like her choices, and can't wait to see how they liven up ( and length up) the other sets. She will be so cute at work!
